“Christ,” Denzel said, half-dragging me toward the table, “you are really something.”

“Whuh?”

“I mean,” he continued, easing into the chair and ignoring the helpful waiter, “you’ll f—— anything that moves.” )

I say I ‘slunk out,’ but, really, I did not slink away alone. As it happened, Denzel was waiting for his car to take him to the airport, and so it fell out that we finally had our long-avoided tête à tête, cooped up together for all the time it took to fly back to New York. )

So I’m lying there, blinking up at Eric with bleary eyes, when I realise that I was wrong: Adam hasn’t left, he’s off taking a shower, his singing a faint croon above the steady drumbeat of the water.

“Erm,” says I, the licensed wit.

“Yeah,” Eric replies, and drops his shoulder bag to the floor.

“‘Wasn’t expecting you,” I quaver.

“Obviously.”

There are no flies on Eric: he’s a bright one. )

It turns out that while Bruce is partial to the occasional orgy, he doesn’t quite fancy brawls in his sitting room: the look on his face as he handed me my rags and tatters was eloquent, and I slunk off to the bath for a minatory shower. On my return, the atmosphere was not much better – Eric and Patrick were long gone – so I apologised again, profusely, and toddled off to bed.

I scarcely slept – there’s nothing like a public shaming to ruin your day – and at dawn I was up, writing me host a note, before I escaped down to the docks and the early morning ferry.

Once on board, and after a few minutes of watching our wake, I took a stroll around, eager to escape from my thoughts. (Here’s the thing: I longed to ring Eric and confess all, and it was too bloody late for that!) The first few cars and trucks did not detain me; it was one at the tail end that made me do a double take. )

This weekend, Bruce invited me to his place on Fire Island. What with Chris spending every moment with Karl, I thought Bruce might be looking for some peace and quiet with yours truly, but, no: he brought along a houseful of guests, including the lovely (and handsy) Paul from my gym. )

The final [Story of O]

By TNL

I’ve been back in New York, slowly getting my life sorted out, for about a month. Once or twice a week, Jon comes over for the night; the rest of the time he’s at a hotel. I’m still intriguing to get him back with January, and one of these days I want to take her out to lunch and explain how, at the end of it all, she’s the one he wants. (I take it as read she wants him, but what do I know?) )

I had such a long wait for my flight that I was nearly the first one on the plane to Sydney. I had the aisle seat in the last row of First Class, which was lovely, but in truth I moved through it all like a chap in a bad dream, all my reactions slowed, waiting fearfully for the other shoe to drop.

The flight filled up, and still the three seats beside me remained empty. There was a pause, until along came two hulking great blokes – it took me a moment to recognise my old friend Chris, so bulked up that his shoulders could scarcely fit in the corridor. His companion was even bigger, if that’s possible, a strapping fellow with long blond hair and a scruffy beard. They tumbled like puppies into the seats across the aisle, and after a moment Chris’ eyes widened as he saw me. )

Jon seemed to catch my mood as we drove back to the Four Seasons in his rental car: friendly, but detached. He looked wonderful, I will say: in the hours since our chat on the phone he’d obviously had a rest and a shower, as well as a shave. He glanced at me from time to time, girding himself, probably, to talk about his problems, but something about my demeanour stopped him.

My thoughts were jumbled, of course, but one thing came through clear as a bell: If Eric and I are to have a chance, all my catting around has to stop. Eric and David caused me many a heart-burning; on the other hand, Eric has suffered through one chap after another with me – check this journal if you don’t believe me.

I imagine Jon was wondering if I’d take him on. . . )

“‘Bright ideas,’ he says,” Jensen grumbled, scrambling to his feet. “I’ll show you ‘bright ideas,’” he added, rubbing his poor bum with one hand as he reached out to corral our lovely Jared with the other. Joe stood, too, those brawny arms crossed so that the muscles bulged, and gave me a significant toss of the head. )

They parted with promises of a return visit to Moor House – the Misses Rivers in the Rochesters’ best carriage, ‘dear Edward’ and ‘dearest Jane’ holding hands as it rumbled down the drive, waving at the handkerchiefs that danced in the carriage window.

Rochester wore his smoked glasses against the morning sun. He had the rudiments of vision, now, and could make out shapes and distinguish certain shade of colour. Their doctor was cautiously hopeful, had even urged a visit to a London specialist; behind them, workmen clambered over the walls of Thornfield Hall, repairing the damage caused by the fire.

“‘Seems a lovely time for a walk, my dear.”

Jane smiled at him, taking the hand in hers and bringing it to her lips. “‘And I can just imagine what I shall look like when I return,” she murmured, nipping at the knuckles.

“I? ‘Behave thus?” he cried, eyes sparkling behind the coloured glass.

“I believe so,” Jane said, with mocking primness, “for all our walks lately have—”

“‘Not with the Misses Rivers!” he roared, but the fire in his voice was merely humorous, and Jane laughingly assented. )
